Bundesliga Match Day 30 Reviews
SV Guntamatic Ried 0-0 FC Flyeralarm Admira
A goalless draw against Admira extended Ried’s unbeaten start to the Qualification Group (W3 D5) - they are the only team in the top flight without a defeat since the halving of the points - and ensured their place in the division for next season. Admira are not quite out of the woods yet but boast a five-point cushion over bottom-of-the-table St. Pölten and will likely be in the Bundesliga again next season. The Lower Austrians have now kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league for the first time since April 2016. The average age of the Ried starting XI for this match was 27 years and 272 days - the oldest line-up they have fielded in the Bundesliga since their 1-1 draw with LASK on 30 April 2011 (28 years and 145 days).
spusu SKN St. Pölten 3-3 SCR CASHPOINT Altach
Relegation is now very much at St. Pölten’s doorstep after they blew a two-goal lead to draw with Altach. Early goals from Schmidt and Hugy saw the Lower Austrians go 2-0 ahead within eight minutes, only for Maderner to cut the deficit with a dipping effort from 35 metres. Schmidt’s 12th goal of the season - a record for a St. Pölten player in the Bundesliga - re-established the two-goal cushion and the home side subsequently created a series of chances to wrap up the victory, but their finishing was poor and Carando strikes in the 66th and 72nd minutes drew the Vorarlbergers level. The Argentine is only the third player this century to score a brace on his Bundesliga debut, after Boyd (July 2012) and Weissman (July 2019).
FK Austria Vienna 3-1 TSV Prolactal Hartberg
Austria retook control of the race for top spot in the Qualification Group with a victory over bogey side Hartberg, who dropped to second on account of their inferior goal difference. The capital club were 2-0 up at the break courtesy of Wimmer’s header and a lovely Fitz free-kick - their sixth and 10th Bundesliga goals respectively. Rep pulled one back with around 20 minutes to go, before Sarkaria wrapped up the win in the final minute. Sarkaria now has six league goals to his name this term - two more than he managed in his first three seasons in the division combined (four). For Hartberg, the defeat brought two unbeaten streaks to an end - five Bundesliga games against Austria Vienna, and six league matches overall.
WSG Swarovski Tirol 2-3 SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz
Sturm Graz kept their noses narrowly ahead of LASK in the race for the automatic Europa League spot thanks to a 3-2 victory over WSG Tirol. Nemeth’s opener and Yeboah’s third Bundesliga goal of the season for Sturm - two of which have come against his former club WSG - put the visitors in control, before Baden Frederiksen pulled one back for Silberberger’s men. Hierländer’s lob made it 3-1, but Baden Frederiksen thundered home to ensure a nervy finish. With 18 Bundesliga goals since he joined WSG last summer, the Dane has already become the club’s all-time record goalscorer in the Austrian top flight.
RZ Pellets Wolfsberger AC 0-4 LASK
After a shaky start, LASK ran out comfortable winners against WAC at the Lavanttal-Arena. Eggestein was directly involved in three of the goals (two goals, one assist), and has now scored 11 times this season. His goals came either side of a beautiful curling strike from Ranftl from the edge of the area, with Reiter rounding off the scoring in second-half stoppage time. Fourth-placed LASK - who have now beaten WAC four times this season in the Bundesliga as well as in the ÖFB Cup semi-final - stay level on points with Sturm Graz in third, but the Styrians remain ahead in the table due to their so-called half-point advantage (their regular-season points total was an odd number and was rounded down when the league split in half).
Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 SK Rapid Vienna
Red Bull Salzburg beat Rapid Vienna for the seventh time in the last eight meetings to clinch their eighth consecutive Austrian Bundesliga title. Daka found the net in both halves to take his tally for the season to 26 goals in as many games - a personal best for the Zambian, who has scored four braces in home games this term and has also become the first player to score five league goals against the Green & Whites in one season since Leonardo for Altach in 2006/07. Marsch’s men extended their club-record run of scoring in consecutive Bundesliga home games to 36, meaning they now trail Rapid’s all-time record of 41 (set between 1983 and 1986) by just five matches.
