FK Austria Vienna vs. RZ Pellets Wolfsberger AC
Having comfortably dispatched Hartberg 3-0 in their play-off semi-final on Tuesday, Austria Vienna have earned the right to go up against Wolfsberger AC over two legs for a place in this summer’s UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers. Wolfsberg qualified automatically for the play-off final after finishing the season in fifth place in the Championship Group.
The odds are stacked against Austria, however. They have lost both matches against Wolfsberg this season – their last meeting back in March ended in a 5-3 defeat – and are winless in four games against the Wolves (D1 L3). In fact, the Violets have won only one of their last nine match-ups with the Carinthians – a 2-0 victory at the Generali Arena on 19 May 2019. During that run, they also drew twice and lost six times.
The hope for Stöger’s charges will be that they can put themselves in a good position on home turf – where their record against WAC has been even over the last six matches (W2 D2 L2) – ahead of their tricky trip to the Lavanttal-Arena on Sunday. The Violets went through the entire Qualification Group unbeaten at the Generali Arena and have only lost four times at home all season.
Austria Vienna captain Grünwald has an excellent record against Wolfsberg, having scored more goals against them (nine) than he has against any other team bar Mattersburg (13). For WAC, top scorer Joveljic and top assister Liendl will be the danger men: both have netted twice against the capital club this season.
